Developing the Next Generation of Talent at Melford

Why is Melford investing in the next generation of talent
For Melford, supporting apprenticeships is about more than gaining qualifications. It allows us to nurture talent within the business, develop practical skills and pass on the knowledge and experience we have built over more than five decades.
While academic learning provides a strong theoretical foundation, working within the business allows apprentices to see how that knowledge is applied in practice. This combination helps them strengthen their technical understanding, build confidence and appreciate the work involved in delivering projects for our customers.
Building a career through a degree apprenticeship: Max’s story
Max joined Melford in June 2025 and is currently completing a degree apprenticeship in project management. This opportunity allows him to combine academic study with hands-on experience in a professional working environment.
One aspect of his role that stands out is his interest in the customer journey. From understanding customer needs to working towards a solution, Max has the opportunity to see how each stage of a project comes together to bring the customer’s vision to reality.
As Max explains:
“One of the things I enjoy most is being involved in the customer journey and seeing how a project develops from understanding the initial requirements through to finding the right solution. It’s a great opportunity to put what I’m learning into practice and understand how each stage contributes to the bigger picture.”
From university to industry: Sophie’s story
For Sophie, joining Melford marks the next step in her journey from university into industry. It provides an opportunity to put her academic knowledge into practice while gaining experience in a professional engineering environment.
At Melford, we encourage our graduate team members to contribute from the beginning, while learning from the experience and expertise of those around them. This approach allows them to build on their academic foundations and develop a deeper understanding of real-world engineering.
Learning also continues beyond university. Our experienced senior engineers deliver both theoretical and practical training, helping graduates continue to build their technical capabilities.
Sophie is particularly keen to develop her technical skills and expand her knowledge beyond her degree.
“I’m hoping to develop my CAD skills using SolidWorks, as well as build my practical construction skills and learn more about electronics. I’m looking forward to expanding my knowledge beyond what I studied at university and continuing to develop my skills at Melford.”
Looking ahead
As the industry continues to evolve, investing in the next generation of talent is more important than ever. At Melford, developing graduates and apprentices remains an important part of our commitment to the future.
Through continued investment in people, we are supporting individuals as they build their careers while strengthening the knowledge, skills and expertise that will help shape Melford’s future.
